Because Ideas Can Be Hot And Cold

Polignano a Mare, Italy

In architectural restoration projects, there is a continuous tension between the quest for modernity and the will to preserve the original identity of the building, between the drive for innovation and the link with tradition. In the JMG House project, there has been an attempt to overcome the dichotomy between these contrasting forces by making them complementary.

In fact, the primary desire of the clients was to create an intimate bond with the surrounding area and with what it expresses, without giving up the comfort and space of a contemporary home.

Thus was born the idea of creating a "rural courtyard" bounded, on one side by the pre-existing trullo, reserved for guests, on two sides by the new L-shaped building which contains the owners' living and sleeping areas and, on the down-hill side overlooking the valley, by the swimming pool.

The skilful play of proportions between spaces, materials and textures of the exterior is also recalled in the interior where opaque and dark surfaces are modelled by the light entering from the sides and the skylights.
